Welcome to the Founder’s GTM Substack.
Recognize the above issues? Running a business means wearing several hats, and sales often ends up being that one you don’t have time to wear properly. 🧢
Maybe you hired a sales director or agency, only to get unqualified leads that didn’t match the price tag. Maybe referrals and organic traffic carried you this far, but now growth is stalling. Or you’ve heard:
❌ “Cold outreach is dead!”
❌ “Just create content and leads will come!”
Let's start with a simple truth: if outbound hasn't worked for you, it's not because it doesn't work.
Most startups try to generate leads the wrong way. They copy paste strategies and tactics that were shared without context. They hire too early, waste money on agencies, or avoid it entirely by hoping inbound leads will somehow fill their pipeline.
Over the last 10 years, I’ve built outbound motions from scratch for all sorts of businesses. The difference between success and failure isn’t budget, tools, or experience. It’s understanding the fundamentals of go-to-market and building a system that fits your business.
What Is Outbound Really?
First of all, what is outbound really about? Outbound marketing is when you proactively reach out to potential customers instead of waiting for them to come to you.
It means doing your research to find the right people, and then contacting them with the right message on their preferred channel, to start a conversation about a business problem that they might have and that you can solve.
It’s simple as that. Consequently, all sales that come from outbound marketing, is outbound sales.
Let's bust some popular myths
Myth #1: "You need an agency or SDR Team"
The most successful founders I’ve worked with started by doing sales themselves. Not because they love cold emails (who does?), but because nobody can sell your vision better than you.
Remember that agency that promised you qualified leads for $5K/month? Yeah, they're using the same automated templates as everyone else. Here's what actually works: Understanding the mechanics yourself first.
Myth #2: "Good products sell themselves"
I worked with a founder who had a ‘revolutionary’ Augmented Reality product. He assumed the market would “get it.” Meanwhile, his competitors were actively talking to prospects and solving problems..
The best product doesn't win. The best-understood product wins.
Myth #3: "Outbound is just spam"
It's like saying "writing is just typing." Sure, bad outbound is spam. But effective outbound is more like detective work:
Finding people with specific problems
Understanding their world
Offering a relevant solution
Building trust systematically
The Uncomfortable Truth
While everyone's arguing about the latest AI sales tool or growth hack, successful businesses are building pipelines using timeless fundamentals:
Clear targeting (not playing the volume game)
Consistent execution (not one-off prospecting sprints)
Measurable results (not vanity metrics)
Here's what nobody tells you: Building a successful outbound system is like building a product. You need:
A clear ideal user —> Who are you targeting?
A specific problem —> What’s the pain they need solved?
A way to measure success —> A proper process and system.
A feedback loop for improvement
Your Next Move
Before you hire another agency or buy another tool, ask yourself:
Do I really know who needs my solution?
Can I explain their pain better than they can?
Do I have a repeatable system for engaging them?
Next Week's Reality Check
This was just an introduction. Next week, we’ll break down how to structure your go-to-market strategy and source the right data, so you stop wasting time on the wrong leads.
Until then, look at your last 5 deals. What problem were they actually trying to solve? (Hint: It's probably not what your website says you do.)
Send me your insights. Real answers only - no corporate buzzwords.
Today's Key Takeaway
Every successful go-to-market strategy starts with clarity:
Who are your best-fit customers?
What's happening in their world that makes them ready to engage?
Why does your offer solve a problem they actually care about?
Outbound isn’t any different. If you can answer these three questions, you're already ahead of most businesses.
Until next week,
